The main draw is of course the classic mode, which comes complete with online, but you may find yourself getting hooked on the new Virus Buster mode like we did, as it offers a totally different experience. In reality, is really two very different games, each with their own high points and limitations, but despite which side of the software you call home, the core offering is still going to deliver. That puts it slightly higher than games like A Link to the Past on Virtual Console, and way under titles like Lost Winds or Star Soldier R.Virus+Buster+mode:+Oh+such+beautiful+chaos.
Mario have the polish we'd expect from Nintendo (kudos go to developer Arika for making that happen), but it's also coming in at way under maximum WiiWare size, so those of you that – like us – are currently infuriated with Nintendo's lack of mass storage device support should be able to find room in the 'fridge' for this 93 block chunk of puzzle goodness. As far as classic puzzlers go, there aren't too many that can top Mario's unique pill-popping experience.The franchise lands on WiiWare under the name, and while online is an obvious focus for this 1,000 point ($10) download, players who dig into the experience a bit more – and bring a few friends along as well – will find that there's a lot to offer in Wii's premiere first party WiiWare offering. Mario has always had a deceptively difficult edge to it, as players go head-to-head to try their skills against friends, and deal with never-ending cascades of colored capsules. Arrange falling pills as the slowly drift to the bottom of the screen, form horizontal or vertical lines of like colors, and eliminate viruses in the process to clear the stage it really doesn't get much simpler than that in concept. Nintendo's franchise dates back to the days of NES, and all the while the series has continued, but never strayed too far from the main formula fans have grown to love.
